Mintek participates in various science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) promotion activities, both out of its own initiative and also in collaboration with government, specifically the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
Mintek’s in-house skills development activities are aimed at changing the skills base and employee membership demographics of the minerals and metallurgical professions at Mintek, with the ultimate aim that this membership will reflect the country’s population demographics.
In addition, Mintek is responsible for carrying out corporate social responsibility projects as envisaged by broad-based black economic empowerment.
Finally, Mintek’s mandate also includes encouraging science, technology and engineering-related careers in general, although the focus is on encouraging learners to take up careers in the minerals and metallurgy
sector.
Mintek aspires to reach targets of 84% for blacks and 55% for females across all its skills development programmes, and has put in place the necessary measures to achieve this.
