Mintek supports the small-scale mining (SSM) sector through research and development of appropriate technologies, and by providing training and support so that development can be as sustainable as possible even though based on limited resources
Mintek’s Small Scale Mining and Beneficiation Division was established with the aim of assisting artisanal and small scale entrepreneurs with:
- The application for mining licences;
- Conducting the testwork required to draw up feasibility studies;
- Adding as much value as possible on site. This can lead to other non-mineral related community projects;
- Commissioning machinery and plant;
- The provision of training;
- The marketing of products.
Our philosophy when interacting with artisanal and small scale miners (ASSMs) is to investigate ways to actively involve the whole local community. Examples of where this approach is being used include:
- Brick making at a waste treatment plant;
- Assistance with setting up vegetable gardens;
- Recovering rock from dimension stone waste dumps, and training people to carve the rock into saleable curios and life style products.
