In December last year, Mintek concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Economic Agency (DRKKDMEA) to explore areas of common interest around community development and economic revitalisation of the former mining towns within the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in the North West Province.
Initial efforts will focus on identifying and setting up of Mintek’s skills development programmes and Small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) for ceramic and jewellery making within the mining and minerals sector in that region.
Under this MoU, Mintek and DRKKDMEA will also conduct a broad feasibility study to identify potentially viable mining-related projects as well as identification of derelict and ownerless mines for possible rehabilitation projects within the District Municipality.
Mintek General Manager for Research and Development, Dr Makhapa Makhafola said, “Partnerships like this are critical in the establishment of sustainable programmes that will benefit a number of unemployed individuals in the local municipalities of City of Matlosana, JB Marks and Maquassi Hills. Mintek is committed to ensuring that this intervention is successful and will be working very closely with the office of the Executive Mayor and the District Municipality Economic Agency.”
Employment opportunities created within these initiatives will focus especially on women, youth, people with disabilities and retrenched and former mine workers.
